Meet Our Presenters

Julie Alexander

Paraíba, Brazil

Julie Alexander grew up in the mountains of North Carolina and earned a love and respect for the natural world early in life. Her family came from a faith tradition that emphasized the importance of caring for Creation and a scouting tradition that taught her to “leave things better than when you found them”.

Her vision of environmental justice was further informed by a year abroad in Brazil as an exchange student, where she saw the results of exploitative practices used by some multi-nationals there. A career as a family nurse practitioner and health care consultant deepened her appreciation of the importance of caring for the biological and social support systems that affect our health.

Julie viewed “An Inconvenient Truth” at her church shortly after being evacuated from her home due to a fire at a nearby toxic waste facility. These events propelled her into action and she applied to be a presenter for The Climate Project.

As a mother, a person of faith, and a health care professional, Julie believes that it is her duty to promote sustainable solutions to the problems of environmental degradation and global climate change. She is currently serving as an MCC volunteer with her husband and two young daughters in Paraíba, Brazil, a semi-arid region that is living the impacts of climate change. Her main work there involves an organic gardening project with high school students. She has also translated the Climate Project presentation into Portuguese and presents it whenever she has the opportunity.
