Sarah Lynn Cunningham
Louisville, Kentucky, United States
Sarah Lynn Cunningham offers the technical problem-solving abilities of an engineer, the communication skills of an educator, the creativity of an artist, and the passion of an advocate. She is a licensed environmental engineer and a certified environmental educator. She holds two inter-disciplinary degrees: a bachelor’s in environmental engineering and a master’s in environmental education and environmental history, both from the University of Louisville. Sarah Lynn is a freelance consultant and teacher. She previously spent 23 years in civil service at state and local environmental agencies. She has been an active environmentalist for 38 years. (She got started young and is older than she looks!)
When Sarah Lynn’s physics professor taught the laws of thermodynamics in the late 70s, he added that some scientists believed that the second law made overheating the planet inevitable. He noted that German scientists called the phenomenon “Wärmetod” (heat death). Sarah Lynn interpreted their prediction to have been something so far off that she needn’t worry about it.
In the mid 90s, she learned otherwise while representing Louisville in a program for reducing GHG emissions, which was sponsored by the International Council for Local Initiatives (ICLEI). She found the presenters, field trips, and readings more interesting – and worrisome – than anything she’d learned in school. The experience led her to shift the focus of her work toward fighting climate change. Last year, after joining The Climate Project, she and her friends started the Louisville Climate Action Network (Louisville CAN). Since she received her training as a TCP volunteer presenter, she has delivered 28 slideshow presentations to a total audience of more than 1,000 individuals.
