TCP Presenter Develops “Show Your Vote” Google Tool
12/07/09

TCP Australian Presenter and Google employee Justin Baird has built a website application for Google which is designed to draw public attention to climate change. The application is called “Show Your Vote” and it is gathering momentum as the UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen gets underway today.
Baird conceived the idea for “Show Your Vote” after attending The Climate Project’s Asia Pacific Summit this past summer in Melbourne. Taking advantage of Google’s policy which encourages its employees to spend 20% of their time on projects they believe in, Baird and his team at Google developed “Show Your Vote” to help unify the environmental movement.
“Show Your Vote” has three tabs: Vote, Explore, and Learn. The Vote tab enables individuals and organizations to record their support for world leaders to reach a “fair and effective climate deal” during the Copenhagen conference. Each time someone "votes" an icon will appear on a Google map in the home location they entered. The Explore tab displays messages of support and creates a visual representation of where votes have been cast around the world. The Learn tab features educational resources for the public including a link to The Climate Project website and the video “Confronting Climate Change,” which was developed by Google Earth and narrated by former Vice President and Nobel Laureate Al Gore.
