Al Gore Says Mass Movement Key to Solving Climate Crisis
Gore rallies grassroots volunteers with new slideshow at The Climate Project’s International Presenter Training Session.
Nashville, TN – More than 650 volunteers with The Climate Project from branches worldwide assembled in Nashville last weekend for a training session with former Vice President Al Gore. Those trained were current Presenters and new trainees with The Climate Project. Presenters deliver an updated version of the slideshow featured in the Academy-Award winning documentary, An Inconvenient Truth. The international training focused on the science of climate change as well as solutions to mitigate its most harmful effects, incorporating new slides and material from Vice President Gore’s latest book, Our Choice: A Plan to Solve the Climate Crisis.
“Since 2006, Presenters with The Climate Project have been on the front lines educating their local communities about the climate crisis. They have reached more than 7 million people worldwide with my slideshow and proven that it is possible for a group of committed individuals to create change and make a difference,” said former Vice President Al Gore.
The International Presenter Training for the first time provided a unique opportunity for young people to become involved with The Climate Project. The Alliance’s Inconvenient Youth, a new teen initiative launched on Earth Day, and Youth Surge programs held a special session on how to deliver climate science presentations to high school and college-aged youth and engage them in the movement for solutions.
The Climate Project (TCP), a program of The Alliance for Climate Protection, supports the work of more than 3,400 volunteers in 56 countries around the world. TCP has nine official branches – Australia, Canada, India, Indonesia, Mexico, Spain, the U.K., the United States, and China. Presenters come from diverse backgrounds and include business leaders, professionals, educators, athletes, musicians, scientists, actors, religious leaders, students, retirees, and other volunteers.
“We are so honored to have hosted some of the world’s most dedicated climate activists here in the United States,” said The Alliance for Climate Protection President and CEO Maggie L. Fox. “Now we will be able to do more than ever before to affect bold action in support of solutions to global warming at such a critical time in our movement to solve the climate crisis.”
Two weeks ago, The Climate Project launched an official branch in China after Mr. Gore traveled to Beijing and personally trained a cross-section of 300 Chinese citizens who share a commitment to reducing the harmful effects of climate change. The event was held with the support of the Chinese government, and was led by the Ministry of Science and Technology.
"It is remarkable to see the dedication and collaboration between our volunteers internationally. With the continued support of Mr. Gore, we expect to take our educational efforts to the next level. Through TCP presentations, we will engage more individuals to make better informed choices about matters related to climate change,” said Jenny Clad, Director of The Climate Project.
Additional speakers at TCP’s International Presenter training included: Sabrina Cowden, Program Director, The Climate Project; Don Henry, Executive Director, Australian Conservation Foundation; Dr. Henry Pollack, TCP Science Advisor and Professor of Geophysics at the University of Michigan; Larry Schweiger, President and CEO, National Wildlife Federation, and Board Member, Alliance for Climate Protection; Nigel Purvis, President, Climate Advisors, and Advisor, Alliance for Climate Protection; Sam Davidson, Inconvenient Youth Program Manager; Grant England, Inconvenient Youth Program Coordinator, Hailey Snow, Youth Director, Alliance for Climate Protection; Jason Miner, Managing Director, The Glover Park Group; Joseph J. Romm, Senior Fellow, Center for American Progress; Anthony Wilson, Director, Executive Influence; Justin Lamoureux, Olympic Snowboarder; and Gloria Reuben, Actress, Special Advisor, Alliance for Climate Protection, and new TCP Presenter.
